Tonight’s Supermoon is a combination of two astronomical phenomena – a Full Moon and lunar perigee. Perigee is the lowest point in the Moon’s orbit when the lunar orb is closest to our planet. If a Full Moon peaks within 90 percent of perigee, it is popularly known as a Supermoon. As a result, a Supermoon can appear up to 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter than an average Full Moon.
